Nizwa sits at the heart of Al Dakhiliyah, where some of Oman’s best-known forts, old settlements, mountain villages and traditional markets are concentrated within a relatively compact region.
Nizwa Fort and Souq
Nizwa is one of Oman’s historic centres and an excellent starting point for exploring the interior. Its imposing fort and circular tower overlook the old town, while the neighbouring souq remains known for dates, spices, pottery, silver and traditional Omani goods.
Friday morning is especially lively, when the traditional livestock market brings farmers, traders and buyers into the souq from surrounding communities.
Forts, villages and aflaj
Beyond Nizwa, Al Dakhiliyah contains some of Oman’s most rewarding historic towns and villages. Bahla is known for its great mud-brick fort and oasis, while Jabreen Castle offers a different look at Oman’s architectural and cultural history.
Further into the mountains, Al Hamra and Misfat Al Abriyeen reveal older settlement patterns, date plantations, aflaj irrigation channels and traditional houses built into the landscape.
Gateway to the mountains
Nizwa is also the natural gateway to the western Hajar Mountains. From here, journeys can continue towards Jabal Akhdar, Jabal Shams and Wadi Ghul, making the city an ideal stop between Muscat and Oman’s mountain interior.
